B Truthful – What to do when the person you hired isn’t the person that turns up

The new employee starts. For the first three weeks they’re great.

Then there’s an unexpected sudden sick day (food poisoning?)

Followed by a few days turning up late to work with a lame excuse.

And then they seem to be having problems with getting the basics of their job done.

Many of our clients have hired new employees (rarely through us!) where they find that after about a month they realise that the person that they thought they had hired was different to the person that had turned up to work!

While this is not common it does raise the dilemma of what you need to do in these circumstances?
The Fairwork Act states that an employee may be dismissed without reason (or recourse through unfair dismissal rules) within the first six months of employment for businesses over 15 staff, and within the first 12 months for businesses with less than 15 staff.

The tough decision is to “bite the bullet”, realise that you have made a mistake, exit the employee and start the process again.

HOWEVER, in most cases managers have meetings with them, council them, provide extra support for them, and then cross their fingers in the hope they “come good”.

But they rarely do.

You will definitely know in the first month or two if they are who you thought they would be. If they’re not, be truthful to yourself – they’re not going to fit and the bullet needs to be bit!
