B Sure – Qualifications, Medicals, Police Checks

How many candidates get roles only for the employer to find out at a later date that there was something in their past that would have raised questions for further investigation or completely stopped them being offered a position.

As it turns out, there are quite a few!

In the past month, we have nearly placed two candidates only to discover right at the death that something was amiss and therefore averted a potential problem down the track. Here are some examples and ideas that may help you “Dodge a bullet”:

Pre-employment Medical Exams – Some companies do them, some don’t. We think you should for two basic reasons.

You have a duty of care to look after your employee and therefore need to be aware of anything that may affect them during their employment or limit them from doing the best job possible – allergies, medication, back problems, sight and hearing to name a few. We nearly placed a Branch Manager with a major paint company only to find out from the medical that he was colour blind!

They have to be able to physically do the job in the environment they will be working. We nearly placed an HVAC Technician who was too big (not fat, just a big man) to get to the equipment they would be servicing. As it turned out, the HR Officer wasn’t aware of the physical environment they would be working in!

Companies such as Kinnect provide an excellent service that is fast and comprehensive.

If you really want to get to the nitty gritty you can use Makesure. This is another comprehensive service that can provide you with a heap of information that may be relevant to the role you are looking to fill. This includes:

  • Driver Licence
  • Education and Qualifications
  • Citizenship / Entitlement to work in Australia
  • NPHC – National Police History Check
  •  Operator Tickets and Licences
  • Workers Compensation Claim History
  • ASIC Banned and Disqualified Register
  • Bankruptcy and Credit History

While some of this may be seen as “over the top”, for the sake of getting it wrong and having to handle the mess afterwards, it’s well worth the effort and not that difficult to organise.

Proceed with caution …..
